NSAID and Painkiller Option List

I wondered if it was possible to list all the potential options of anti inflammatories and pain relief as some vets only seem to recommend the same things and no other option. I know it also has to be right for the dog but would be nice to have a list of all the options, I know there is metacam, paracetamol, tramadol, but what else.

So potentially a very long list!

Basically I’d break them down into NSAIDS (that give both pain relief and anti-inflammatory action) and other pain killers that can be used alongside them.

Mom itself a list of NSAIDs is long. Most are used once a day. The main ones would be:
    metacam/meloxaid/loxicom (same drug)
    onsior
    rimadyl
    previcox
    carprieve
    trocoxil (given once a month)

Then you’ve got drugs that can be alongside these (as we would advise all dog with OA be on an NSAID unless there is a specific reason why not.

    These could include:
    gabapentin
    tramadol
    pardale (paracetamol)
    amantadine
There are a host of injectable drugs too which might be used as a one off or as part of a regular programe at the vets:
    Cartrophen
    ketamine
    vetergesic
    methadone

some supplements are thought to perhaps have analgesic properties too and of course things like laser therapy and acupuncture work to relieve pain.

I had the same problem with my vets, just the same three drugs mentioned over and over again so I ended up doing my own research for other options. Thank you for the list Kathryn!

    Great list Kathryn.
In case you hear of these others, or wish to ask your vet about them, I will add a few more here:

    NSAIDS
    Cimalgex (cimicoxib)
    Galliprant (grapiprant)

    Other adjunctive drugs
Pregabalin (may be used instead of gabapentin)
Memantine (may be used instead of amantadine)
    Amitriptyline

Many of these adjunctive drugs are used to treat a different type of pain than NSAIDS. Pregabalin, Memantine and Amitriptyline are often more commonly prescribed by dedicated pain practitioners and pain specialists.

    Warm wishes,
    Shona
