Loxicom and Golden Paste

Our dog, Alfie (8 years) was diagnosed with seriously arthritic elbows early last year. He was prescribed Loxicom. This helped enormously and so we gradually reduced the dosage to less than half. When we were in France we visited a vet for a prescription, just in case we ran out. He advised that they don’t like to keep dogs on Loxicom long term. We gradually cut it down until Alfie was completely off the meds. He seemed to be doing fine, with no problems. A couple of weeks ago he suddenly had difficulty getting up (back legs) so we went to our vet and she advised back on the meds. She also said his hips had lost a lot of mobility and she thought he was in pain. I feel terrible for not realising this. He is back on the 25k dosage, but he seems unable to cope with more than a stroll down the road and back. We have been walking for 1 1/2 to 2 hour walks and importantly swims, which he loves. How long will it take before we see an improvement and can I safely give him golden paste with Loxicom?

    Good evening

Dogs are amazing at coping, and coping so well that owners often don’t see deterioration till it’s progressed… so you’re not alone. This is one of the many reasons we try and encourage vets and owners to work together and have the dog reassessed regularly looking for changes in posture, muscle mass, joint range of motion and overall mobility and behaviour… but it is hard as I know as a vet myself owners are often concerned regarding the burden of regular visits…

I guess what I’m trying to say is this is global problem that we haven’t got the perfect answer to yet. So do not blame yourself x

Dogs will cope well with hind limb issues by shifting their weight carriage into their front limbs… they should carry 40% in the hindlimbs and 60% in their forelimbs, so when that subtly shifts from the above to 30% in hind and 70% in front it often goes unnoticed.

This means they can have had discomfort for quite a while before it gets noticed… which means it can take a long time to try and “rewind” the signs.

The other problem is the changes in gait and capability in the hindlimbs will be a mixture of discomfort and pain, plus muscle mass changes, ligament and tendon changes as well as joint changes… so that weak awkward movement you see won’t simply go when the pain is more under control… this rebuild requires time and appropriate “retraining” and development which physio and hydrotherapy can be very helpful with.

Loxicom is an anti inflammatory with pain relief… it won’t rebuild function… what it tries to do is remove pain and discomfort so that the dog can move more comfortably and rebuild the lost tissue… this will take months.

There is an owner modular course that was made by CAM to help owners understand this… https://www.camonlineshop.com/dog-owners/

All proceeds go back to CAM. There is so much more info within CAM conversations on the website and on our YouTube channel.

Turmeric within golden paste can irritate the gut… so alongside an NSAID like loxicom it can cause tummy upset… so you must be vigilant to signs of inappetence vomiting or diarrhoea

    I hope that helps

    Regards,
    Hannah

Thank you so much for your answer Hannah.

I will not use the golden paste.

The good thing is that yesterday he seemed to be much better, more animated and back to his playful self.
