What is your veterinary background?

I graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Sciences Edinburgh in 2012 before working in both mixed and small animal practices. I started at the University of Bristol in 2015 investigating the welfare of farm and pet cats, where my interest in the assessment of quality of life in pets began. I am now undertaking a PhD looking at how veterinary professionals assess the quality of life of dogs in their practice and how it can help improve the welfare of dogs.

Remind us how Laser Therapy works

When laser light penetrates tissues, photons from the light will stimulate a physiological process within the cells. They penetrate unhealthy cells and stimulate the cell membrane and the structures within the cell, these release enzymes that help to normalise the cell function, give pain relief and encourage healing.

CAM conversation WITH CAM Carly Nairn ABOUT the science behind laser therapy

What is your veterinary background?

I began as a nursing assistant way back in 2000 and progressed from there to become fully qualified in 2005, I have been in the same practice from the start and became head nurse there around 9 years ago. Over the last few years rehabilitation has become a passion of mine and I decided to set up laser therapy clinics in my practice, these were hugely successful not just for arthritis but for many other conditions as well. As time went on I felt I needed to pursue this area and so in March 2018 I bit the bullet and left nursing, I am currently training towards my hydrotherapy qualification whilst working at a hydrotherapy pool and I am also now a product specialist with the company who supplied my practice with the laser, and so I now go around showing people how they work and to promote them as well.
